Here is a fact that surprises most owners who price up OpenClaw: the server is usually the cheapest part of the bill. OpenClaw itself is free software. Hosting it can cost as little as US$4 a month. The line that decides whether you pay HK$300 or HK$3,000 a month is the AI model the agent talks to, and how often it talks.
This page answers the money question for a Hong Kong business in one place. It lists what the main hosting options charge as of 5 October 2026, including UD's own OpenClaw Express, shows where the cheaper options win, explains the model costs that hosting quotes leave out, and ends with a recommendation by type of buyer.
What are you actually paying for when you run OpenClaw?
You pay for two things: a computer that keeps the agent running 24 hours a day, and the AI model that does the thinking. OpenClaw is free, open-source software under the MIT licence. Hosting typically costs US$4 to US$30 a month, while model usage ranges from zero to over US$200 a month.
OpenClaw is an AI assistant that lives inside messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram. It can read email, run small tasks on a schedule and remember earlier conversations. Because it runs around the clock, it needs a machine that never switches off.
Think of it like opening a small shop. The hosting is the rent. The AI model is the staff wages. Most people compare rents carefully and then forget to ask what the staff will cost.
If you are still deciding whether to run OpenClaw yourself at all, our earlier guide on self-hosting versus managed OpenClaw covers that choice. This page assumes you have decided to run it and want to know what it costs.
How much does OpenClaw hosting cost in 2026?
Advertised OpenClaw hosting prices range from about US$4 to US$13 a month for overseas providers on promotional terms, rising sharply at renewal. UD's OpenClaw Express, hosted in Hong Kong, lists from HK$220 a month for its Starter plan and from HK$580 a month for its Professional plan.
Here are the current figures. US dollar prices are converted at HK$7.8 and rounded.
Overseas providers (prices checked September to October 2026)
--- Hostinger Managed OpenClaw: US$5.99 a month (about HK$47) on a 24-month term paid upfront, about US$144 on day one. Renews at US$11.99 (about HK$94). Hardware specs not disclosed. Source: Agent 37's September 2026 price check, written by a competitor, so verify at checkout.
--- Hostinger VPS with OpenClaw template, KVM 2: US$8.99 a month (about HK$70) on a 24-month upfront term, renewing at US$14.99 (about HK$117). 2 virtual CPUs, 8 GB memory, 100 GB storage. Hostinger's own install guide recommends KVM 2 or above for OpenClaw.
--- Hostinger KVM 4: US$12.99 a month (about HK$101), renewing at US$28.99 (about HK$226). 4 virtual CPUs, 16 GB memory, 200 GB storage.
--- DigitalOcean 1-Click OpenClaw: from US$12 a month (about HK$94) for 1 virtual CPU and 2 GB memory, billed monthly, per DigitalOcean's own announcement.
--- Agent 37 Basic: US$3.99 a month (about HK$31), same price at renewal, 1 virtual CPU and 4 GB memory, community support only at this tier. This is the vendor's own claim.
Hong Kong-hosted: UD OpenClaw Express (as listed on 5 October 2026)
--- Starter: from HK$220 a month, against a listed regular price of HK$488. 2 virtual CPUs, 4 GB memory, 80 GB storage. Aimed at individuals and the self-employed.
--- Professional: from HK$580 a month, against a listed regular price of HK$1,288. 6 virtual CPUs, 16 GB memory, 240 GB storage, on an independent server. Aimed at SME teams.
--- Current promotion: the OpenClaw Express plan page advertises a limited-time code, new2026, for 50% off the whole order.
--- What the page does not state: the billing term needed for the "from" price, whether the code stacks with it, when the offer ends, and the renewal price. Ask all four before you pay.
How much will the AI model add to the monthly bill?
For most small businesses the AI model costs more than the hosting. Operators who route simple jobs to cheap models typically spend US$20 to US$50 a month (about HK$156 to HK$390). Leaving a premium model on every task can push the bill past US$200 a month.
These ranges come from Kilo's 2026 survey of operator spending. Kilo sells a model subscription itself, so treat its recommendations with care, but the reported numbers are consistent with other guides.
Three details drive the bill:
--- The "heartbeat". By default, OpenClaw wakes up every 30 minutes to check for work, 48 times a day, even when there is nothing to do. On a premium model, an idle agent has been reported to cost about US$5 a day, roughly HK$1,170 a month, for doing nothing. Pointing the heartbeat at a cheap model, or making it less frequent, removes most of that cost.
--- Model choice. Kilo cites one operator who ran identical work on six models for three weeks. Monthly cost ranged from US$261 on the most expensive model to US$4 on a budget model and zero on a local one.
--- Conversation length. Every message resends the earlier conversation. Long, cluttered memory files make every later message more expensive.
Hong Kong adds one more wrinkle. At OpenAI's DevDay on 29 September 2026, OpenAI said ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers could use their plan allowance inside OpenClaw. That route does not help most local firms, because Hong Kong is still not a supported region for ChatGPT. Anthropic, meanwhile, stopped letting Claude Pro and Max subscriptions power OpenClaw from 4 April 2026, according to TechCrunch. For a Hong Kong business, the practical options are pay-per-use model access, Google's Gemini models, which are officially available in Hong Kong, or lower-cost Chinese models.
What is the real monthly cost for a Hong Kong SME?
A realistic all-in monthly cost for one shared OpenClaw agent runs from about HK$250 on the cheapest overseas host to about HK$600 on a Hong Kong-hosted plan, assuming sensible model use. Add staff time if your team has to maintain the server itself.
Two worked examples, using a mid-range model bill of US$30 a month (about HK$234):
--- A solo consultant on Hostinger KVM 2: about HK$70 hosting plus HK$234 model, so roughly HK$304 a month in the first two years, rising to about HK$351 at renewal. The consultant handles updates and security personally.
--- An 8-person accounting firm on OpenClaw Express Starter: HK$220 hosting plus HK$234 model, so roughly HK$454 a month, billed in Hong Kong dollars with local support. Whether model use is already included in the plan is something to confirm with UD before signing.
The hidden line is time. Kilo's guide tells self-hosters to budget "a few hours a month" for updates, firewall rules, backups and fixing things after an update breaks. If an office manager's time is worth HK$150 an hour, which is an assumption you should replace with your own figure, three hours a month adds HK$450. At that point the cheap server is no longer cheap.
Four questions to ask any OpenClaw host before you pay
--- What is the price after the first term, and how long is the term I must prepay?
--- Is any AI model usage included, and what happens when it runs out?
--- Who applies OpenClaw updates and security fixes, and how quickly?
--- Can I export my agent's settings and memory if I leave?
Any host that cannot answer all four in writing is asking you to buy on trust.
Where do the cheaper OpenClaw hosts beat OpenClaw Express?
The overseas hosts win clearly on price. Hostinger's KVM 4 gives the same 16 GB of memory as OpenClaw Express Professional for less than a fifth of its "from" price, at Hostinger's promotional rate, and Agent 37 runs a basic agent for about HK$31 a month. For a technically confident owner, those savings are real.
Being honest about where UD loses:
--- Price per unit of computing power. On published figures, overseas providers charge far less for comparable hardware. OpenClaw Express Starter at HK$220 costs about three times Hostinger KVM 2 at its promotional price, and KVM 2 has more memory.
--- Price transparency. Hostinger and Agent 37 publish renewal prices. The OpenClaw Express page currently shows a "from" price and a regular price, but not the renewal terms.
--- Extras in the box. Hostinger's managed plan now includes Hermes Agent on the same subscription, and Agent 37 includes 1,000 app actions on its basic tier.
Where OpenClaw Express is stronger:
--- Location. UD describes the service as built for Hong Kong on low-latency cloud servers, which means faster responses for local users. If where your data sits matters to your clients, ask UD to confirm the server location in writing.
--- Payment and billing. Local payment methods and HKD pricing, instead of a US dollar card charge for two years upfront.
--- Support language. Technical help in Cantonese and Traditional Chinese, which overseas budget tiers do not offer.
--- Team-sized hardware. The Professional tier's 6 virtual CPUs suit several staff sharing agents that browse the web, a workload that small overseas tiers struggle with.
Which OpenClaw hosting option should you choose?
Choose by who will look after the agent, not by the headline price. Owners comfortable with servers should take a low-cost overseas plan and budget for the renewal price. Non-technical teams that want Hong Kong hosting, local billing and Cantonese support are the natural fit for OpenClaw Express.
--- You enjoy tinkering and only want to experiment: a US$4 managed host or Hostinger KVM 2. Budget against the renewal price, not the promotion.
--- You run a small firm with no IT person and want one reliable agent: OpenClaw Express Starter, after confirming the billing term, renewal price and whether model usage is included.
--- Five to twenty staff will share agents that browse websites or handle files: OpenClaw Express Professional, or an overseas 4-CPU, 16 GB server if you have someone to maintain it.
--- You have not yet picked a specific, repeated task for the agent: buy nothing yet. An always-on agent without a defined job mainly produces a model bill.
Whichever you choose, keep the agent's control panel private. OpenClaw's own security guidance advises keeping the dashboard off the public internet, and an agent that can read email deserves that care.
OpenClaw costs in Hong Kong: the short version
OpenClaw is free, hosting is cheap, and the AI model is where the money goes. Overseas hosts cost HK$31 to HK$226 a month and win on price. OpenClaw Express costs more, from HK$220 a month with a 50% promotional code currently advertised, and wins on local hosting, HKD billing and Cantonese support. Ask about renewal prices and model costs before you commit, and you will avoid the two surprises that catch most first-time buyers.
Choosing technology should feel like having a knowledgeable friend beside you, not a salesperson. That is the idea behind our promise: UD stands with you, making AI human.
