Before recommending any "free AI assessment" to a client, I check one thing: what happens between clicking Start and seeing the first question. With most benchmarks, the answer is a form asking for your work email. With UD's AI Rank, I picked an industry and the first question was on screen. No form, no account, no card.
That matters if you are the person your boss asks to "find out how we compare on AI". You want a quick, low-commitment way to get a number for your industry before anyone books a consultant. This page covers exactly what the free AI Rank test gives you, how it compares with other free benchmarks, where it falls short, and how to turn the result into something useful.
What does the free AI Rank test include?
AI Rank is a free AI competitiveness test for Hong Kong SMEs from UD. You pick one of 8 industries, answer 10 multiple-choice questions about how your business uses AI, and get a score out of 40 plus your position against others in your industry. There is no sign-up or payment before the questions start.
Here is the fact sheet, checked on the live AI Rank page on 2 October 2026:
- Price: free. No plan, no trial period, no card.
- Sign-up before starting: none. You choose an industry and the questions load immediately.
- Industries: 8, namely catering, retail, real estate, education, medical, logistics, renovation and pet care.
- Format: 10 questions, each with four options from A (fully manual) to D (AI-driven).
- Score: out of 40, shown with an industry leaderboard.
- Time: the page says about 5 minutes.
- Language: Chinese interface written in conversational Cantonese.
- What happens after: optional contact with UD by WhatsApp, phone or email for a free consultation. Nothing is triggered automatically.
How do you start the AI Rank test step by step?
Open the AI Rank page, scroll to the industry grid and click the one closest to your business. Answer the 10 questions honestly, choosing the option that matches what your team does today, not what you plan. Your score and ranking appear at the end. The whole flow is three steps and takes about five minutes.
The questions are concrete, which is the point. The first retail question, for example, asks how your shop manages inventory. The four answers run from counting stock by hand, to updating an Excel sheet, to a POS system that tracks sales automatically, to AI that analyses sales and suggests reorders. You will know your answer in two seconds.
Three tips to get a score you can actually use:
- Answer for the business, not for yourself. If you use ChatGPT daily but the rest of the team does not, pick the option that describes the team.
- Screenshot each answer. The value is in the pattern of A to D answers, not only the total. You will use them in the prompt further down.
- Pick the closest industry, not a perfect one. A beauty clinic fits "medical" better than "retail" because the questions focus on bookings and client records.
How does AI Rank compare with other AI benchmark tools?
AI Rank is the fastest start of the benchmarks we checked, and the only one built around Hong Kong SME industries. Eliassen's AI Value Navigator goes deeper on ROI but expects real cost and benefit figures. The State of AI for Small Business assessment is similarly quick but uses US-weighted data and asks for an email to send its plan.
- UD AI Rank: free, no sign-up, 10 questions, 8 Hong Kong SME industries, score out of 40 with an industry leaderboard. Best for a first read in five minutes.
- Eliassen AI Value Navigator: uses your own estimates of costs, benefits and use cases to calculate a one-year net ROI, and compares spending, adoption and procurement with industry peers. Its benchmarks come from US tech leaders surveyed in Q3 2026. Best when you already have budget numbers and need a P&L view for finance.
- State of AI for Small Business assessment: five questions, no account, four maturity stages, with an email required for its 30-day plan. We compared it with AI Rank in detail in AI Rank vs State of AI for Small Business.

What are the honest limitations of AI Rank?
AI Rank is a quick self-assessment, not an audit. Its 10 answers are self-reported, it covers only 8 industries, and the leaderboard preview on the landing page uses example company names. The trend figures on the page, such as 87% of SMEs seeing AI as key, are not linked to a published source. Treat the score as a conversation starter.
- Self-reported answers. The test cannot see your systems. Optimistic answers produce an optimistic rank.
- Example leaderboard. Names like "Tech Solutions Ltd 38/40" on the landing page are a preview, not verified companies. Your real comparison appears only after you finish.
- Unsourced trend stats. The 87%, 72%, 58% and 45% adoption figures on the page carry no citation, so do not quote them in a board paper.
- Narrow coverage. Eight industries. A law firm, a trading company or a design studio has to pick the nearest fit.
- No downloadable report. The page does not mention a PDF or written plan. Next steps come through a consultation with UD.
- Cantonese-only interface. Fine for most Hong Kong teams, harder for English-speaking managers.
None of these is a reason to skip it. They are reasons to pair the score with real benchmark data, which is the next step.
How should you use your AI Rank score?
Use the score as a starting point, then check it against published benchmarks and turn your weakest answers into a 30-day plan. Eliassen's Q3 2026 survey is a useful reference: it puts median weekly AI use at 26.4% of workers in US firms with US$1M to US$10M revenue, and only 10% in wholesale and retail.
A few more figures from the same Eliassen benchmark report are handy for framing your result:
- AI users in the smallest firms save a median 11.6 hours a week.
- 29% of those small firms have abandoned at least one AI tool after buying or building it.
- Policies and governance is the weakest area for small firms, even when adoption is strong.
These are US numbers, so treat them as a direction rather than a target. If your AI Rank answers are mostly A and B, you are probably below that 26% weekly-use line. If they are mostly C and D, your next risk is governance, not adoption.
Try it now: turn your AI Rank answers into a 30-day plan
Take the test, screenshot your answers, then paste them into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini with the prompt below. You get a short, prioritised plan based on your weakest areas instead of a generic AI checklist. The whole exercise takes about 15 minutes, including the test itself.
Try this prompt:
I run operations at a [industry] SME in Hong Kong with [number] staff.
I took a 10-question AI adoption test. Each answer runs from A (fully manual) to D (AI-driven). My answers were:
[paste each question and the letter you picked]
My score was [X]/40.
1. Group my answers into the three weakest areas.
2. For each area, suggest one change we could make within 30 days using tools a non-technical team can run, with a rough monthly cost in HKD.
3. Flag any change that needs a data privacy check under Hong Kong's PDPO.
4. Do not suggest anything that needs a developer.
When you rerun the test after 30 days, compare the letters, not just the score. Moving two answers from A to C is real progress even if the total only rises by four points.
A free test will not transform your business, but a clear starting number makes every next conversation shorter. We know AI's cold edges. We know your real challenges. 28 years with UD, turning technology into a partnership with warmth.
